
SECTION 14.1: THE X AND Y INTERCEPT, THE ZERO
AND THE SYMBOL b

When a line crosses either the xaxis and or yaxis, it crosses the axes at a particular point. In figure 1 below, the line crosses the xaxis at the point at (3, 0) and the yaxis at (0, 3).

The xvalue of the point on the line that crosses the xaxis is called the "x intercept" or the "zero." The "xintercept" or "zero" in figure 1 is x = 2.
The yvalue of the point on the line that crosses the yaxis is called the "yintercept." The "yintercept" in the above graph is y = 3. Mathematicians have decided to name the yintercept with the lower case letter "b." So in figure 1, the yintercept would be labeled b = 3.
There is no special letter to name the xintercept, though as stated above, the xintercept has a special name called the "zero" or the "root."
